Evie Armstrong-Clarke who studies Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins has recently won a competition to debut her exclusive range in Topshop’s top 20 stores worldwide and online. We decided to invite Evie along to our Ashford factory to design her own EMIR jeweller’s bench to help her with future projects.
Evie was excited to see where the jeweller benches are made as this is where we produce the benches used on her course. Part of her visit also included looking through the different options available and Evie is looking forward to planning the design, “I’m going to think about the elements that really stood out in the designs from the workshop and what’s adaptable to being a jewellery maker and having your own workbench.”
A top priority for Evie is to have a bench that is practical for use in small London flats. With that in mind she liked how the St. Martin’s benches incorporated an extra worktop for design work and fits into the side panel of the bench when doing practical work. Evie commented, “Being London based, anywhere I’m going to live is going to be shoebox sized, so that’s great being able to convert a table back into a workbench.”
Another feature that is being considered is having a drawer underneath the worktop for space saving storage, “I do want some leg room as well but having a drawer underneath is quite good for the little bits of metal you’re working on as that stuff can clutter up your work space.”
Evie’s designs can be seen in the Oxford Circus branch of Topshop.
